Black Seed Oil has been found to have significant anti-bacterial effects including against Salmonella. This bacteria is commonly implicated in food poisoning, particularly in children.
Food poisoning caused by the Salmonella enterica bacterium is known as Salmonellosis. Salmonellosis can cause serious infections in young children, older adults, and those with impaired immune systems.
Spread of salmonella bacteria occurs due to poor food hygiene practices. Salmonella most commonly infects beef, poultry, milk, and eggs however vegetables can also be contaminated. Contaminated foods usually look and smell normal. Salmonellosis causes, fever, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
The study conducted at The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab examined the effect of Black Seed Oil against twenty bacterial strains of Salmonella isolated from different environmental sources.
Black seed Oil was found to be highly effective against Salmonella Interestingly it was more effective against certain Salmonella species for which conventional antibiotics (Ceftriaxone and Ciprofloxacin) were ineffective.
Furthermore investigators used gas chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis of black seed oil to shed light on its constituents. This showed 10 compounds including thymoquinone, p-cymene, cis-carveol, thymol, α-phellandrene, α-pinene, β-pinene, trans-anethole, α-longipinene and longifolene.
